Migrate from Moodle, Google Classroom, Canvas or Excel
Bring your existing courses, students and question banks in minutes: export from your current platform, paste or upload the file, review the preview and import. Nothing is duplicated and nobody gets a made-up password.

In this guide
- Export your students and questions from Moodle, Google Classroom, Canvas or a spreadsheet.
- Import students with a preview, plan limits and set-password links.
- Import questions from Moodle XML, GIFT, Aiken or CSV/XLSX.
- Bring whole Moodle courses (units, files, assignments and quizzes) from a course backup.
- Understand what is skipped and why.
Where to start
Open Overview: in the Getting started checklist you'll see Coming from another platform?. It takes you to Import, with Coming from Moodle? (whole courses, see below) and three more options: Students, Practice questions and Exam questions. You can also start from Users → Import students, Practice bank → Import or Exam bank → Import questions.
Every import follows the same three steps: Your data (paste or upload), Review and adjust (columns, options and a live preview) and Import (summary you can download). Nothing is saved until you click the final Import button.
1. Export your students
| Platform | How to export | What we recognize |
|---|---|---|
| Moodle | Course → Participants → select all → Download table data as CSV. The CSV used for Moodle's "Upload users" also works. | firstname, lastname, email, cohort1 (as course/group). username and password are ignored. |
| Google Classroom | Class → Grades → Settings → Download all grades as CSV (or export to Google Sheets and copy the columns). | Last Name, First Name, Email Address. |
| Canvas | Course → Grades → Export → Export entire gradebook. If your export has no email, add a column with it. | Student ("Last, First" is split automatically), Section (as group), Email. |
| Excel / Google Sheets | Download the template from Import students or use your own sheet with a header row. | First name, last name, full name, email, course/group, in English or Spanish. Phone and ID columns are ignored. |
2. Import your students
-
Paste or upload
Copy the cells (including the header) from Excel or Google Sheets and paste them, or upload a
.csvor.xlsxfile (up to 5 MB and 5,000 students per import). A plain list of emails also works. -
Check the columns
Each column shows two sample values and what we think it is. Change any of them: the preview updates instantly. The only required column is Email.
-
Choose the options
Academic course: enroll everyone in one course, or use the course/group column (existing courses are matched by name; missing ones can be created within your plan's course limit). Content access: already paid (they see their courses right away) or pending payment. Send invitation by email.
-
Read the preview
Every row is classified: new student, account in another academy (added as a member; their password is not touched), already in your academy (updated and assigned to the course, never duplicated) or skipped with the reason: invalid or missing email, repeated in the file, a staff member (admin or teacher) or no seats left in your plan. The plan bar shows how many students fit.
-
Import and share the access links
Small batches import at once; large ones run in the background with a progress bar (you can leave the page). New students never receive a made-up password: they get a link to create their own password, valid for 7 days. If your academy's email isn't set up yet, download Access links (CSV) and send each student their link yourself.
Tip: expired link
If a student opens the link after 7 days, they can use Forgot your password? on your academy's sign-in page.
3. Export your questions
| Source | How to export |
|---|---|
| Moodle | Question bank → Export → Moodle XML format (keeps categories and images) or GIFT format. |
| Canvas / Google Forms | Export to a spreadsheet and paste the columns, or convert to GIFT/Aiken with your usual tool. |
| Word documents | Write them in Aiken format (question, options A) B)… and ANSWER: B) and paste them. |
| Excel / Google Sheets | Use the CSV template or your own columns; the correct answer can be 1-5, A-E or the option text. |
4. Import your questions
Choose the bank: the practice bank (practice tests, don't count for the grade) or the exam bank (only the official exam is graded). From an exam you can import straight into it. The format is detected automatically.
| Type in the file | In Acatudy |
|---|---|
| Multiple choice (2-5 options, one correct) | Multiple choice |
| True/False | Multiple choice with True / False |
| Numerical (with tolerance or range) | Numeric (grid-in) |
| Short answer | Numeric if every accepted answer is a number; otherwise short text graded by hand, with the accepted answers as grading criteria |
| Essay | Long text graded by hand |
Moodle and GIFT categories become topics and units; you can also send everything to a topic you already have. In vertical (LMS) mode you can link the imported units to a subject unit so its practice tests use them. The first image in a Moodle XML question (JPG, PNG or WebP up to 5 MB) is kept as the support image in the practice bank.
Bring whole courses from Moodle (course backup)
Coming from Moodle? You don't have to rebuild your courses by hand. Open Import and click Coming from Moodle? → Import a Moodle course. Upload the course backup (.mbz, Moodle 3.x or 4.x, up to 2 GB) and Acatudy recreates it: sections become units, files become resources, and assignments and quizzes come over with their questions. You review everything, choose the course and whether each quiz is a practice test or an official exam, and only then import.
The step-by-step process, what becomes what, what's skipped and the limits are in Import a Moodle course (.mbz).
Questions: what is skipped and why
- Question types Acatudy doesn't have: matching, cloze, drag and drop, calculated, ordering, random and descriptions.
- Multiple choice with more than 5 options, several correct answers or partial credit.
- Questions whose text already exists in the bank, or repeated in the file.
- Rows with errors (for example, a missing option) and questions over your plan's quota.
Every skipped item is listed with its reason in the preview and in the downloadable summary. For security, a Moodle XML file with a DOCTYPE or entities is rejected.
If the student import isn't working
- "We couldn't find any student rows": include the header row and at least one student. If you paste, copy the header too.
- The file can't be read: only
.csvor.xlsx, up to 5 MB. If the Excel file won't open, save it again as.xlsxor export it to CSV. With more than 5,000 rows, split it into several imports. - "Tell us which column has each student's email": in Check the columns, mark the column that holds it as Email; it's the only required one.
- Skipped rows: the preview gives the reason for each one (invalid or missing email, repeated in the file, a staff member or no seats left in your plan). Fix the file and import it again: students already in your academy are never duplicated.
- Students don't get the email: if your academy's email isn't set up, download Access links (CSV) and send them yourself. If the link expired (7 days), they can use Forgot your password?.
Still not working? Open a support ticket (from Tudy or in Support → New ticket) and attach the downloadable import summary.
