Trash: restore deleted questions, topics, units and exams
Deleted questions, topics, units and exams go to the Trash, where they wait until you restore them or delete them permanently. Here is what goes there, what doesn't and how backups fit in.

In this topic 7
- Your Acatudy subscription: plans, prices, invoices and canceling
- Storage and plan limits: what counts, where to see it and how to free up space
- Keep your account secure: passwords, sessions and signing out

In this guide
- What goes to the Trash when you delete it, and what doesn't.
- How long deleted items are kept.
- How to restore an item or delete it permanently.
- When you need a backup instead.
Example: you delete the topic SAT Math by mistake. Its units (Linear equations, Ratios & percentages…) and their questions disappear with it. Open the Trash, restore the topic, its units and the questions you need, and everything is back.
What goes to the Trash
| When you delete… | Goes to the Trash? |
|---|---|
| A question from the Practice bank | Yes, under Questions |
| A topic | Yes, under Topics. Its units and their questions go too, each in its own group. |
| A unit | Yes, under Subtopics. Its questions go too. |
| An exam | Yes, under Exams. Students' past attempts are kept. |
| A subject | No. The delete window warns you that it can't be undone, and its videos and files are removed from storage. |
| An assignment | No. |
| A question from the Exam bank | No. |
| A question deleted from Challenges (Delete question and resolve challenge) | No, it's deleted permanently. |
| A user | No. Removing a user takes them out of your academy; it doesn't go to the Trash. |
How long items are kept
There's no automatic expiry: deleted items stay in the Trash until you restore them or delete them permanently (or until the academy itself is deleted). Each group lists the 50 most recently deleted items, with the date and time under Deleted:. The counter at the top shows the total of Deleted items listed.
Questions in the Trash don't count toward your plan's question limit.
Open the Trash
Open it with the Trash button at the top of the Practice bank (it has no entry of its own in the side menu). It opens inside Website Studio; the Website Studio link at the top takes you back.
Only academy admins can open it. Teachers can't, even if they deleted the item themselves: ask an admin to restore it.
Restore an item
-
Find it in its group
The Trash has four groups: Questions, Topics, Subtopics (units) and Exams. Questions show the start of their text; the rest show their title.
-
Click Restore
You'll see Record restored. and the item goes back where it was.
-
Restore what depended on it
Restoring is one item at a time. Restoring a topic doesn't bring back its units and questions: restore them too. Start from the top (topic, then units, then questions) so nothing ends up inside a deleted parent.
Restored exams come back as drafts
When you delete an exam it's switched to draft, so after restoring it students won't see it until you publish it again. Check its dates and settings before publishing.
Delete permanently
Click Delete next to the item and confirm Delete permanently? This action cannot be undone. You'll see Record permanently deleted. Deleting an exam permanently also removes its list of questions; the questions themselves stay in your exam bank.
Permanent means permanent
Neither you nor the Acatudy team can bring back a single item deleted from the Trash. The only way back is restoring a whole-academy backup.
Trash or backup?
The Trash is for undoing a recent deletion of a question, topic, unit or exam, on any plan, in a couple of clicks. For everything else (a deleted subject or assignment, an item deleted permanently, or many changes at once) you need a backup:
- Restorable backups of your academy come with the Professional (last 7 days) and Institutional (last month) plans.
- A restore puts the whole academy back to that date, replacing anything created afterwards. It's requested with a support ticket.
- Backups don't include uploaded videos and documents.
Frequently asked questions
I deleted a subject by mistake. Can I get it back from the Trash?
No, subjects don't go to the Trash. If your plan includes backups, ask for a restore as explained in Backups.
Can I empty the whole Trash at once?
No. Items are deleted permanently one by one with their Delete button.
Where are deleted questions from a challenge?
Nowhere: the Delete question and resolve challenge button skips the Trash. See Question challenges.
